Research Special Interest Group Seminar

Every year, the Research Special Interest Group presents a research day at the OADD conference on Developmental Disabilities.

A key note speaker is sponsored to address the participants prior to the day's presentations. Papers and presentations are called for annually in the fall.

About the Research Seminar

The objectives of the Research Day are to:

  • Update research advances in the field and exchange information regarding ongoing research activities in developmental disabilities in Ontario
  • Provide opportunity for networking and collaboration for researchers and students with an interest in developmental disabilities from across the province
  • Discuss ways to stimulate interest and support for research at the level of institutions, governments, and research funding bodies

The 2010 Research Day Seminar was a success thanks to the hard work of the RSIG Conference committee. An outline of the seminar day events is below.

For information on the 2011 Research Day Seminar, please check back in the Fall.

The Earlier the Better: Evidence Driven Autism Care
This keynote address will focus on the evidence being gathered from a number of exciting initiatives in Autism which are leading to earlier identification of risk markers and approaches which hold promise to improve developmental trajectories. Data and case studies will be presented which will help the audience understand new techniques and approaches being used in the field of autism.

Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Wendy Roberts
Dr Wendy Roberts is a Developmental Paediatrician at Bloorview Kids Rehab and the Autism Research Unit(ARU) at the Hospital for Sick Children as well as a Professor of Paediatrics in the University of Toronto. Teaching and research based on intensive and ongoing clinical work with children with autism and their families has been her major focus in the last few years after spending many years studying ADHD and Learning Disabilities. She has won many teaching awards and mentored many inter-disciplinary trainees including the CIHR Autism Research Training Program as well as Developmental Paediatric fellows and residents in Toronto. Research interests have included the prospective study of Infant Siblings of Children with Autism, along with Genetic studies of children with Autism and their families. Dr Roberts has been a leader in the use of diagnostic gold standards used in studying the Autism phenotype and is interested in understanding the different pathways along which children travel as signs of autism emerge and evolve over time.
